MILANO DESIGNWEEK 2026 Film Screening

Experience one of the world's largest furniture and design festivals through powerful, lifelike 4K footage filmed by Nobuo Yaguchi, one of Japan's leading documentary cinematographers. The screening features commentary by designer Nobuyuki Narigasawa, who planned and produced the project and reported from the event.

Profiles
Nobuo Yaguchi
Nobuo Yaguchi
Documentary Cinematographer / Video Creator

A leading Japanese documentary cinematographer who has spent many years filming the nature, culture and World Heritage sites of the world.

He has shot numerous television programs and documentaries, including the TBS series "World Heritage," "THE World Heritage" and "Sekai Fushigi Hakken!," as well as "Canon Special" and "Panasonic Special."

Over more than 30 years he has visited over 100 countries, recording magnificent nature, precious cultural heritage and people's daily lives on film. He is highly regarded in the field of documentary filmmaking, particularly for his work on natural heritage sites.

He took up 4K footage and aerial drone shooting early on and has filmed around the world. Drawing on a wide range of techniques — from the ground, from the air and at the water's edge — he continues to convey, from the perspectives of "land, sea and sky," the appeal of the nature, architecture and culture that exist only in each place.

In 2019 he formed the video production team "nobunobu" with Nobuyuki Narigasawa, CEO of NOBU ARCHI DESIGN, and is in charge of video production for the design and architecture YouTube channel "jpdesign TV."

Since 2022 he has continued to report and film on location at Milano Design Week (Salone del Mobile.Milano / Fuorisalone), one of the world's largest design events. Drawing on his long experience in documentary filmmaking and 4K video technology, he records the front line of design around the world — architecture, interiors, product design and urban space — in his own visual style.

From 2000 he spent about ten years as head of the Japan branch of an architectural design firm headquartered in Atlanta, USA, and in 2009 he founded NOBU ARCHI DESIGN Co., Ltd. He handles a wide range of architecture and spatial design, including housing, hotels, medical facilities, commercial facilities and restaurants.

His representative works include Enoshima Island Spa, Hotel Okura Guam, Yuki Hospital and Enoshima Hotel, and he also took part in the Seawood Hotel Miyakojima project with the architect Shin Takamatsu. Yuki Hospital in particular, whose château-inspired architectural design is highly acclaimed, has been used as a filming location for numerous television dramas, films and music videos.

At Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, he was in charge of the design of the "Wellness Smart House" installed in the Iida Group Holdings Pavilion. Through spatial design proposing the living environment of the future, he took part in presenting a new lifestyle that fuses housing, health and technology.

Since 2022 he has reported and filmed on location at Milano Design Week every year, sharing the latest trends in architecture, interiors and product design with Japan and holding screenings across the country, actively developing activities that connect Japanese and overseas design culture.

In 2024 he became Japan Project Partner of AMDL CIRCLE, led by Michele De Lucchi, one of Italy's leading architects. He also serves as product manager for the Japanese market launch of PRODUZIONE PRIVATA, the design brand run by De Lucchi, and promotes a wide range of projects including product planning and development, branding, exhibition space planning and marketing.

In 2025 he became an advisor to the Asahikawa Creative City Promotion Council in Asahikawa, Hokkaido.

He is also engaged in regional revitalization and industrial promotion through architecture and design, driving new value creation by leveraging design networks in Japan and abroad.

In 2026 he became an advisor to Osaka Design Week.

Building on his wealth of experience as an architecture and space designer and the broad network he has built through international design projects and communications, he contributes to the development of Japanese design culture and the promotion of international exchange.

New Being — Form, Sound and Body

Exhibitor: SINKIROW

A live performance bringing together SINKIROW's forms, musician Saki Oshitani and dancer Chinami Imura.
Forms inspired by fleeting moments of natural beauty reveal new expressions through sound and the body. Rather than treating a work as an object to be viewed, the performance sees it as a presence that resonates with bodies, space and time. Form, sound and movement respond to one another in a dialogue created on the spot, building a shared world.
Grounded in SINKIROW's belief that a work becomes complete when worn, these performances express New Being through a different experience each time.

“Photosynthetic Architecture”: Producing Oxygen and Energy through Plant Photosynthesis — with a Report on the Invited Exhibit at Milan Salone 2026

Exhibitor: Setsunan University, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Department of Living and Environmental Design × Department of Life Science

From "Architecture That Is Built" to "Architecture That Is Planted":
"Photosynthetic Architecture" is a proposal to make buildings function like trees. In conventional architecture, walls, windows and roofs play roles such as blocking or admitting light and protecting against wind and rain. In Photosynthetic Architecture, photo-biofuel cells that use plant chloroplasts are built into these elements, turning a building into an "environmental device that produces energy and oxygen" — research and a proposal that fuse design and science.
For example, chloroplasts are extracted from plants that would otherwise be discarded, such as leaves from felled trees or non-standard vegetables, and the solution is placed in translucent double panels or tubes and incorporated into windows, walls, roofs and furniture. The architecture itself then photosynthesizes and produces energy and oxygen. It is not simply "architecture that uses plants" but "an attempt to bring the functions of life into the very composition of architecture."
Proposed by Professors Kawakami and Matsuo of Setsunan University, this world-first proposal was invited to exhibit at Salone del Mobile.Milano in April 2026 and received great acclaim. This time, the actual piece will also be exhibited at OSAKA SALONE.

Speakers
Hinako Kawakami Professor, Department of Living Environment Design, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Setsunan University
Yasumitsu Matsuo Professor, Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Setsunan University
