Profile

Born in Osaka in 1941, Tadao Ando taught himself architecture and established Tadao Ando Architect & Associates in 1969. Major works include the Church of the Light, Rokko Housing, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Chichu Art Museum, Nakanoshima Children’s Book Forest and the Bourse de Commerce. His many honors include the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize for the Row House in Sumiyoshi in 1979, the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995, the UIA Gold Medal in 2005, Japan’s Order of Culture in 2010, and Commander of France’s Legion of Honour in 2021. He has held visiting professorships at Yale, Columbia and Harvard. He became a professor at the University of Tokyo in 1997 and is now professor emeritus.
