HASNICCA is a design studio based in Tokyo and Kyushu, guided by the principle of thinking deeply about essence.
More than Covering explores new possibilities for traditional Japanese plastering.
Plastering has conventionally been treated as a finishing technique that covers architectural surfaces. This project reexamines that premise, viewing plaster as a material whose color, composition and texture can be designed together, and even as structure itself.
The exhibition presents works that draw out plaster's properties through combinations with other materials, layered compositions and light transmission.
By controlling thickness, layers and translucency, plaster emerges as a system for controlling materials.
This approach also moves plastering indoors, creating stable working conditions independent of the weather.
These experiments open new opportunities for the craft and propose new ways of practicing plasterwork.
