SARAYA's Challenge: Reviving the Ocean and Building a Sustainable Future

Since developing Japan's first medicated liquid soap, Shabonnet, in 1952 and helping popularize infection prevention, SARAYA has expanded globally around hygiene, the environment and health. Alongside household products such as Yashinomi detergent and the natural sweetener Lakanto, we pursue sustained social contributions and SDG initiatives, including environmental conservation in Borneo and the Wash a Million Hands project in Uganda.
At Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, we supported the private-sector pavilion BLUE OCEAN DOME. Under the theme of ocean regeneration, it addressed urgent issues including marine plastic pollution and the restoration of blue carbon ecosystems. We are also working to build an island-model circular economy linking environmental conservation with regional revitalization, including the Tsushima Project to tackle pollution from plastic washed ashore.
We will continue to advance toward a flourishing future in which people and the planet thrive, through reliable hygiene technologies and the sustainable use of marine resources.

SARAYA BLUE OCEAN CHALLENGE — Redesign Plastics —

The blue of our planet is the color of the ocean, where life began and continues to circulate. Yet its depths now carry the shadows of human activity. SARAYA believes that confronting the ocean's challenges requires redefining the role of plastic itself. From Osaka to the world, this exhibition presents our challenge: using design to reshape plastic and create a life cycle for resources. Installations offer an aesthetic experience that sharpens the senses and invites reflection on the future.
Exhibits include bins showing what happens after disposal—incineration or recycling—videos used in the BLUE OCEAN DOME pavilion at Expo 2025, and durable Arita porcelain hand-soap containers as alternatives to disposable plastic.
Participatory events during the exhibition include a public recording for FM COCOLO, hands-on workshops exploring the circulation of marine waste, and talks about Tsushima in Nagasaki Prefecture, where large amounts of marine debris washing ashore pose a serious challenge.

Talk: Save Otosha, Guardian of Tsushima’s Sea! Protecting Our Blue Ocean and Future Together

Guest: Tsuyoshi Maeda, Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture
A member of the SDGs Strategy Division, Future Environment Department, Tsushima City, Mr. Maeda is a key advocate of the SDGs, leading efforts to address serious marine plastic waste with a strong sense of responsibility to future generations. His enthusiasm and positive communication have also made him a popular study-tour guide.

Theme: Learning about Tsushima's marine plastic waste through the character Otosha
This accessible introduction to the current state of Tsushima's sea features Otosha, a character created through a collaboration between Tsushima City, Kanazawa College of Art and SARAYA. The project was also presented during Tsushima Week at BLUE OCEAN DOME, Expo 2025.

An installation recreating Tsushima's shore using actual marine plastic waste will be on display. Visitors can pick up and examine the objects. A fun program including short skits offers children and adults a valuable opportunity to consider what is happening in the sea and what we can do.
Families with children, groups of friends and individual visitors are all welcome. Please feel free to join us.
Attendees will receive Aoi Hoshi no Aoi Umi, a book explaining today's ocean challenges in an accessible way, provided by the Blue Ocean Foundation.

We look forward to welcoming you.
